How Automotive-Grade NTC Temperature Sensor Ensures Stable Operation of EV Heated Steering Wheel

Time:2026-08-25 Views:4

As the electric vehicle (EV) cabins become smarter and more comfortable, heated steering wheels have become a standard feature in mid-to-high-end models. To prevent issues like uneven heating, prolonged high-temperature operation, or even circuit overload and insulation aging during steering wheel heating, it’s necessary to use EXSENSE automotive-grade NTC temperature sensor in the steering wheel heating system to ensure a safe and stable heating process.

Currently, the heated mainstream steering wheel solutions on the market will install EXSENSE automotive-grade NTC temperature sensor using an embedded fitting method. Typically, the NTC is placed inside the heating pad within the steering wheel and electrically connected to the heating wire to monitor temperature in real time. During heating process of steering wheel, the NTC temperature sensor continuously collects temperature data. When the temperature drops below the set threshold, the system sends commands to the ECU to maintain heating power output. When the temperature approaches the upper safety limit, the ECU adjusts the power, cycling the heater on and off to maintain a comfortable constant temperature state. If it detects a sudden abnormal temperature rise, the ECU immediately triggers a power cut to avoid overheating. The EXSENSE automotive-grade NTC temperature sensor ensures the stability and safety of EV heated steering wheel at the hardware level and is a key component for temperature monitoring.

With the support of NTC temperature sensor, steering wheel heating system effectively solves problems like cold steering wheel grip and reduced driving comfort in low-temperature environments. This relies on the outstanding features of EXSENSE automotive-grade temperature sensor:

1. High Accuracy: With resistance value/Beta accuracy of ±1%, EXSENSE automotive-grade NTC can accurately detect subtle temperature changes during steering wheel heating process, solving issues of local overheating or insufficient heating caused by traditional fixed-level heating. This keeps the steering wheel temperature in a comfortable range while avoiding wasted energy.

2. Fast Response: The response speed of the NTC temperature sensor can reach ≤1s, quickly detecting low-temperature startup or temperature fluctuations due to environmental airflow. This prompts the ECU to adjust heating power, improving dynamic temperature control and preventing discomfort caused by delayed response.

3. Customization: EXSENSE Electronics can provide customized NTC temperature sensors based on different steering wheel sizes, heating wire layouts, and installation space constraints to meet flat, lightweight design requirements.

The temperature monitoring provided by EXSENSE automotive-grade NTC temperature sensor reduces risks during steering wheel heating process and enhances the user experience. It is an important part of turning EV steering wheel heating process from simple warming to maintaining a constant comfortable temperature, covering safety protection, comfort enhancement, and energy optimization. To meet the stringent requirements of EV, the production process of EXSENSE automotive-grade NTC temperature sensors operates strictly in accordance with VDA 6.3 standards, and the products meet AEC-Q200 testing requirements, providing customers with high-quality NTC products.
